Practice retrieval
The idea
Retrieval means trying to recall information without first looking at the answer. Then check your response and correct errors. This makes gaps visible. Use questions that require explanation as well as facts, and revisit material across multiple sessions.
Worked example
After reading a lesson, close it and explain the main process aloud. Reopen it to compare your explanation with the text. Record one missing connection to practice again.
Another application
Read a process explanation, then close it and sketch the steps. Compare your sketch with the original. Correct missing links and revisit them later rather than immediately rereading the entire page repeatedly.
A common misunderstanding
Feeling familiar with a page does not show that you can explain it without support. Check understanding with specific questions.
Try it yourself
Write five questions from a lesson. Answer them with the lesson closed, then use the lesson to check and correct your answers.
Check your understanding
Is copying a definition with the book open retrieval practice?
Reveal the explained answer
No. Retrieval requires attempting to recall before checking.
